What am I doing?
During the creative craftsman course, you will spend a lot of time in our studios. Here, you learn to turn a design into a high-quality product. Sometimes you even make a small series.
You start with a sketch of the design and make a technical drawing. Then you get to work with the materials and experiment with them. You work with different machines and tools. So you learn a wide range of techniques, both handicraft and digital. So it is true vocational training in which modern craftsmanship is central.
What am I making?
What do you make within the four directions of creative craftsman:
Glass
Within this direction, you will learn to design and restore stained-glass windows. This could be a new design or a restoration of a window from an old (and/or monumental) building. Sometimes you will work on behalf of a client. These assignments may include new stained-glass windows, restoration projects or warm-glass objects. For the latter, think of one-offs or small series of promotional gifts….
Ceramics
You will make unique products, objects or a small series of ceramics. From tableware such as mugs and plates to interior products such as vases and bowls. The emphasis is on making models and moulds to produce ceramic products in runs. You will work with traditional techniques such as: turning, modelling, casting and glazing. You will also work with contemporary techniques such as 3D printing.
Leather
A range of products and applications made from leather or alternative materials. From bags and shoes to various accessories such as laptop covers and (tool) cases. You will create your own designs or work on commission.
Textiles
You learn techniques such as (machine) knitting, weaving, tufting, designing designs and making hats. You make products for fashion, interior design, the textile industry and art. Sometimes you make something for yourself and sometimes you are commissioned by a customer.
What am I learning?
During the Creative Craftsman programme, you develop knowledge and skills in drawing, design, knowledge of materials, traditional and digital techniques and working methods, costing, entrepreneurship and digital skills. General subjects like Dutch, English and maths are also part of the programme.
Where do I do my internship?
You choose a work placement that matches your direction, interests and learning wishes. This could be a workshop specialising in glass, textiles or ceramics, a textile or shoe manufacturer, a fashion label, an interior design company, a workshop in orthopaedics or, for example, an organisation making upholstery for the car or boat industry.
Student Creative craftsman leather Sjors did an internship at Cools Bekledingen. Watch a video of Sjors’ internship here. Students Creative craftsman textile Moos and Sophie did an internship at the TextielMuseum. Watch the video of Moos’ and Sophie’s internship here.
What should I be able to do and like?
You have a feeling for materials and design and possess spatial and technical insight. You also follow developments in the fields of design, crafts, interior design, fashion and sustainability. You like working with your hands, you can translate a (digital) design into a final product and you dare to experiment with materials and new and innovative techniques.
Do you recognise yourself in this? Then chances are there is a Creative Craftsman in you!
What can I do after SintLucas?
After the Creative Craftsman course you can start your own company, work in a studio or in the business world, for instance. You can also continue studying at a higher vocational education programme, such as an art academy, a programme for product design, design, interior design or a teacher training programme for creative subjects.
How registration and admission works
You will apply for the programme of your choice via our website from 1 November 2024. After your application, you will receive an invitation for a matching interview at SintLucas. During an interview with a teacher and student from the study programme of your choice, we will check together whether you and SintLucas are a match. Above all, we have an open and relaxed conversation, so you can make a good study choice. In preparation for the interview, you can bring (creative) work with you. It is also possible to make an assignment. After the interview, you will receive a study advice. This advice can be positive (we think you fit in with SintLucas and the study programme) or negative (we think another school and study programme would suit you better). Even with a negative recommendation, you are admissible at SintLucas. We trust that you will make a good study choice with our advice. Read more about application and admission here.
If you have a question about this, please send an e-mail to aanmelding@sintlucas.nl.
