Student exhibits at Dutch Design hotel Artemis

At the exhibition Open Up Your World, two very cool compact travel bags by SintLucas students are on display in the lounge of Dutch Design Hotel Artemis. This hotel is a meeting place where hospitality and Dutch design come together. Exhibitions with colourful art and design give the hotel a luxurious ambience.

The students of Creative craftsman Leer were tasked with designing a compact travel bag to mark the 50th anniversary of Interrail. Interrail is a popular way of travelling for young and adventurous travellers who want to explore Europe.

They had to choose a work by a European artist and combine it with a country or city from Europe; a challenging assignment. As they were challenged to create the perfect combination between the practical and the artistic. The design had to be compact so that the traveller could easily carry it, but at the same time it had to be representative of the beauty and diversity of Europe.

“They managed to create a unique travel bag that is both stylish and functional. The design is inspired by the work of a European artist and depicts the beautiful landscapes and culture of a specific country or city from Europe.”

Special design

Iris van de Kerkhof, one of the SintLucas students, had the Spanish flag as inspiration for her design of the compact travel bag. On the inside of the shoulder straps, the Spanish flag is clearly recognisable with the silver back pad referring to the flag’s shield. The design is enriched with influences from well-known Spanish painters and artists. The drop shape at the bottom of the bag refers to Salvador Dali’s clocks, while the painting on the front is a combination of works by Gaudi and his Sagrada Familia. This ingenious design is unique because the bag is divisible into individual components, just like zip-off trousers. This makes it easy to leave the bag behind in hotels, allowing travellers to explore the city quickly and smoothly.
