Star chef Jermain de Rozario judges final results of second- and third-year students on the Creative Craftsman Ceramics course.
The end of June marked the final presentations of our second- and third-year ceramics students. Star chef Jermain came to visit our ceramics studio in Boxtel. Our students were eager to present their creations. Earlier this year, they had been commissioned by Jermain to design a tableware that stimulates the taste buds. There is a lot of competition in the culinary world and star chefs are always distinguishing themselves with special dishes. But how can tableware make a difference in this? They also visited Rozario restaurant to get inspiration for the crockery design.
For the presentation, all the designs were neatly laid out on a table. The students had also provided the plates with food, so Jermain got a good idea of the function and look of the plate. Jermain gave the students a great life lesson “you are perfect the way you are, we all are”. He found all the creations so beautiful and unique and was even moved by some of the stories. “They are unique items, I really had a lump in my throat at times”.

Real food together
Kain Saas: “The ‘Sushi seesaw’ stems from the idea that when you go out to dinner together, not everyone finishes eating at the same time. With the ‘Sushi seesaw’, that’s a thing of the past. You are obliged to eat at the same time, otherwise the plate goes out of balance. And it is multifunctional because you can also make it into a game and thus enjoy your food in a different way. It’s called the Sushi seesaw, but of course you can serve other kinds of food on it, as long as the food is the same size and you can eat with chopsticks.”
Red berries
Luna van Kessel: “My plate IS an ode to my childhood. We used to have dinner at my grandmother’s every Sunday and a tin of fruit cocktail always came on the table with dessert. Together with my cousins, we were always arguing about who got to eat the red berries. So we had devised a game. Whoever grabbed a berry the quickest with the straw got lucky and got to eat the berry. So this is what my tableware is based on.”

More on Star Chef Jermain Rozario
“We take inspiration from the everyday and try to make every visit feel like the first time. Innovative, but also deliciously familiar. With inspiration from Asian cuisine, where Indonesia in particular has a special place. But our inspiration also comes from Helmond, and especially from our own vegetable garden. Seeing the process from A to Z is satisfying and also adds a lot more flavour. Be surprised and enjoy.”
