The bachelor on study trip to London

In January, our Bachelor Visual Communication and 3D Design students went on a study trip to London. Besides all those fun highlights, they also worked on an important assignment. Students Stijn Scholten and Evy Lavain are happy to tell you about their experience. The Bachelor offered by SintLucas is a collaboration with the University of Northampton.

Before Stijn and Evy started the Bacelor 3D Design, they both studied Spatial Design. Stijn chose the Interior specialisation and Evy chose Event.

Retrospective study trip

On Monday, the trip to London began. After arriving, a nice dinner in the city and a quiet evening, a busy programme awaited the next day! The students had some set moments and the rest they focused on the assignment they were given during this trip. This assignment was about one of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) for which they had to come up with a solution. The students were free to choose their own topic. Besides this assignment, there was also time for inspiration. Students visited the Design Museum, Ogilvy (a British advertising, marketing and PR agency), and the University of Northampthon. In short, a very busy but educational week for our students.

Stijn: “The fun, but also exciting thing about this trip was that for your research you had to talk to random people on the street to find information. It’s still a different country, a different language, different people and a different culture. I learned how to interview people spontaneously while taking as little of their time as possible. I got a lot out of it and will take this with me in other surveys.”

Stijn Scholten - SDG 10 Reduce inequality

“I researched several queer spaces in London. I found out that they suffer a lot from gentrification. That means that these so-called queer spaces often disappear, because then another zoning plan is devised for them. So they regularly have to go looking for a new safe place uninvited. In my research, I mainly looked at what these places literally look like, with a focus on interiors.

My solution to this problem is to make a kind of yurt that you can take with you to different places. This way, you can always take your own familiar surroundings with you when gentrification looms. In the caravan, I designed a carpet based on different colours stemming from the different pride flags. To still narrow down the brief, I made this carpet serve as the main thing in the design, so that it remains flexible in use.”

Evy Lavain - SDG 14 Life below water

“I went to London to investigate the pollution of the Thames. From my desk and field researsch, it came out that baby wipes are one of this river’s biggest problems. I came up with an alternative how to make reusable baby wipes easy to use. In fact, the concept of reusable baby wipes already exists, only the use of these wipes is very inconvenient (research has shown).

I came up with a system, including a product, how reusable baby wipes become accessible to every parent. The product consists of 2 boxes, with interchangeable cassettes in them, which you hang on the wall near the dresser. The first box contains a cassette with clean wet baby wipes. The wipes are pushed up by a push-up system, so they can be taken out of the box quickly. The second box contains a cassette for disposing of the used wipes, which contains an antibacterial coating and an odour neutraliser. When the cassettes are completely used up, they can be easily taken out of the boxes and then placed along the street. A service collects the used cassettes and then cleans them. The baby wipes are washed and can be used again.”

iF DESIGN STUDENT AWARD

All designs conceived and executed by our students during this trip will be submitted for the iF Design Student Award. One of the world’s leading design awards for students, with around 10,000 entries from all over the world every year. iF Design provides a platform for innovative concepts by students. A great opportunity for our students to get more credit for his or her work and build brand awareness.
