Imagine: your favourite trainer brand asks you to create an advertising campaign. Anything goes and you may live on any media: websites, apps, social media, a game or an experience in virtual reality. Do you already have an idea of how you would go about this? Then this media design course is a perfect fit for you.
As a media designer, you are involved in design, communication, interaction and technology on a daily basis. New technologies such as AI play an increasingly important role. Based on your interests and talents, you will design your own education. You can develop broadly as a media designer or specialise in a field. You do this by following optional subjects and by working in studios that match your interests. Examples of studios are Media & interaction design, Art & design and Visual design & motion*.
Within the media and design programme, it is also possible to choose Learning Route ä6. This is a new form of education within SintLucas in which there is maximum space for your learning process. You make your own choices when it comes to projects, your place of learning and, for example, time management.

What am I doing?
A typical approach of a media designer? You start by coming up with an idea, a concept. For this, you research the client, who the target group is and the problem for which you are developing a solution.
You try out different forms, styles and media to get your story and message across in a catchy way. Then you make prototypes. This helps you discuss your ideas and find out if they work. As a final step, you start working on the creation process. This includes elaborations such as 3D visualisations or the latest forms of robotics or AI.
What am I making?
The work of the media designer is broad. Examples of media you work on are websites, apps, virtual reality applications, animations, games, (digital) illustrations or posters. You also develop complete campaigns combining logo, corporate identity, photos and video. Also consider applications such as experience or art installations used in a museum.
What will I learn in the media design course?
Within our programme, you will develop the skills and knowledge you need to create media for different applications and target groups. This includes concept development, 2D and 3D design, animation, illustration, interaction design, game design, web design and text design. You will also learn software programmes including the Adobe packages and Blender. We teach you to combine communication, design, interaction and technology. This is how you create cool applications. Of course, you also learn general subjects such as Dutch, English, maths and citizenship.
Deepening or a broad education: optional subjects and studios
Within the media design programme, you can study a subject in greater depth or develop broadly as a media designer. You do this by following optional subjects, such as Game Play, Animation, Illustration and Creative Deepening. And you choose studios during your programme. In these studios, you will work together with students from other study programmes on assignments for companies or other organisations. This gives you practical experience in a specific field.
The themes of the studios and optional subjects may change every year, so that our education always matches what companies require. The studios currently on offer can be found below.
Within the media and design study programme, it is also possible to opt for Learning Route ä6. This is a new form of education within SintLucas in which there is maximum space for your learning process. You make your own choices when it comes to projects, your place of learning and, for example, time scheduling.
Always the latest studios:

You will create your own work and art, such as installations, with the opportunity to use various materials and techniques. A place where you can learn practical skills: how printing, laser cutting, 3D printing, signing and other new applications work.
Game Design & Technology
Game design and development, including entertainment games and serious games, with a focus on storylines, 3D design and target group-oriented design.

Where do I do my internship?
You will do two six-month internships. Depending on your interests and learning wishes, you will choose an organisation that suits you. The Media Design programme offers a wide range of possibilities: at an advertising or communication agency, a design studio, a multimedia company, a game, animation or illustration studio, a digital design agency or, for example, a product development company. You can also work in user experience design, interaction design or front-end development. In addition, organisations in the field of social design or interactive art design agencies are among the possibilities.

What should I be able to do and like?
You have a sense of design, communication and technology. You can empathise with others and are interested in people’s behaviour. You are curious, inquisitive and like to experiment. Naturally, you follow technological innovations and other trends closely. By combining this knowledge, you come up with innovative technical and interactive ideas and media expressions.
What can I do after SintLucas?
This programme offers you many opportunities. You can work as a graphic designer, concept developer or (junior) art director at an advertising agency. Or you could work as an interaction designer, 3D designer or game artist at specialised media companies. Professions such as illustrator or animator are also possible. With your diploma in hand, you can also continue your studies at a university of applied sciences, for example at the HKU or BUas, at an art academy, or choose a course in communication or media design.
Former student Jim van de Sande studied Media Design at SintLucas and now works as a Concept Creative at Megawatt in Eindhoven. Check out his story here.
How does application and admission work?
You will apply for the programme of your choice via our website from 1 November 2024. After your application, you will receive an invitation for a matching interview at SintLucas. During an interview with a teacher and student from the study programme of your choice, together we will see if you and SintLucas are a match. Above all, we have an open and relaxed conversation, so you can make a good study choice. In preparation for the interview, you can bring (creative) work with you. It is also possible to make an assignment. After the interview, you will receive a study advice. This advice can be positive (we think you fit in with SintLucas and the study programme) or negative (we think another school and study programme would suit you better). Even with a negative recommendation, you are admissible at SintLucas. We trust that you will make a good study choice with our advice. Read more about application and admission here.
If you have a question about this, please send an e-mail to aanmelding@sintlucas.nl.
