Spatial design students learn in practice

In partnership with Megawatt.

A fictitious brief, but yes, based on realistic assignments from their own clients. Advertising agency Megawatt inspires and motivates our students to realise cool concepts and designs for festivals.

In our education, we find it important to cooperate with companies in the field. Also to help students make that step from school to the job market even better. A subject teacher with substantive knowledge from SintLucas works together with a client from the field. One of these clients is Jim van de Sande, creative at Megawatt. He likes working together with SintLucas: “The briefings we draw up for students are based on our own briefings. This gives students a realistic picture of their clients. We are pleasantly surprised by the quality of the students. You notice that they think from a concept and are experienced in its elaboration. In their designs, the concept really comes to life. In addition, they are motivated to do good work. They put in a lot more time than necessary, we really see that.”

Win-win situation

Megawatt invests time in preparing briefings and reviewing final presentations. They enjoy doing so. Jim enthusiastically says: “the projects run smoothly in communication and coordination. That gives energy to do this every year. Apart from that: the students are the visitors of festivals for which we think up activations. That helps us get information and input on what the target group really finds important at a festival. In addition, we are always looking for creative talent. During a previous project, we noticed one of the students, who did an internship with us, and now works here full-time.”

Students enthusiastic about project

Students from the Spatial Design programme were also delighted to be commissioned by Megawatt. Students Hansje and Jasmijn recount enthusiastically. Jasmijn: “They are a fine and nice client. Thanks to the clear briefing, we knew very specifically what was asked of us. Hansje adds: “We received feedback that made our concept or design even better. Always in a positive way.”

Activation for well-known social media platform

The students had a choice of two briefs. One of the briefs was: come up with an activation for a well-known social media platform at a HipHop festival to improve its image among an older target group. Hansje: “I got a lot of inspiration about HipHop. In the process, I came across a lot of jukeboxes, which I then incorporated into my concept. I learned how to attract and influence a certain target group in my design.”

Activation for a popular series

In the other assignment, students devised an activation to create awareness for the second season of a popular series. Jasmijn: “I learnt a lot from this, such as looking at the makeability of the design. Is it doable? I used the ‘maze feel’ of the series as a starting point in my concept. You can see that in the design.”

Within our project education, students from different fields of study can work together on a project. These assignments cover the broad field SintLucas trains for. From briefing to production supervision, from design to product and from quotation to invoice. Students themselves are responsible for serving the client optimally. Register a project?
